Supporting TCM Education & Cultivating Talent
RMIT Melbourne TCM Internship Site

As a registered TCM practitioner in Victoria, our clinic director has for years overseen the clinical training of RMIT’s TCM interns, providing them with invaluable first‐hand practice opportunities. By hosting these students, we help them integrate classroom theory with real cases—enhancing their clinical judgment, communication skills, and diagnostic confidence—while also exposing them to the responsibilities and requirements of practicing within Australia’s cultural context.

“We believe that TCM’s development in Australia cannot rest on the shoulders of a single generation; it requires a systematic framework for education and clinical mentorship. The professional standards, language proficiency, and cultural adaptability of tomorrow’s TCM practitioners will determine the industry’s long‐term sustainability.”

As an overseas‐based TCM practitioner, I remain convinced that learning beyond the clinic is equally vital. Only by continually absorbing cutting‐edge knowledge can we deliver the highest‐quality care to our patients.

  • 2024
Had the honor of attending the Classical Formulas Clinical Workshop in Hong Kong, delving into the precise application of classical prescriptions to modern ailments; refining syndrome‐differentiation thinking and formulation skills; and benefiting tremendously from Professor Yuan’s clinical insights—strengthening my resolve to continue studying classical TCM.
  • 2025
Traveled to Shanghai for the “Five-Element Acupuncture: The Path of TCM Wisdom” International Symposium, where we explored, on the basis of classical texts, the integration of meridian theory with cultural heritage. This expanded my understanding of the “Five-in-One” acupuncture concept and furthered my research into cross‐cultural clinical practice in TCM.

“I believe that truly vital TCM must be deeply rooted in tradition, yet boldly look to the world.”

Challenges Facing Our Practice’s Development

  1. Limited Market Awareness
Although TCM enjoys a solid foundation within Melbourne’s Chinese community, its recognition and acceptance in mainstream society remain limited—hindering both client‐base growth and service diversification.
  2. Barriers to East-West Collaboration
While partnerships with Western-medicine and other health-service providers have strengthened, interdisciplinary communication and mutual understanding still face hurdles—constraining innovation and broader adoption of integrated care models.
  3. Shortage of Professional Talent
A critical, real‐world issue is the relative scarcity of qualified TCM practitioners—especially in an environment like Australia’s, where TCM is not part of the mainstream medical system. Attracting and training outstanding clinical TCM talent for the long term is a significant challenge.
Moreover, practitioners who truly understand local Australian culture, possess strong communication skills, and can build trusting patient relationships are even rarer. These cultural and service-style gaps often impact the consistency of clinic experiences and long‐term patient retention.

“As a clinic that has served multicultural communities over many years, we recognize that TCM’s sustainable future in Australia depends not only on preserving professional skills but also on recruiting, training, and retaining local TCM doctors who are bilingual, skilled in cross-cultural communication, and deeply committed to clinical responsibility. Addressing this talent challenge is our top priority.”

  1. Customer Education & Service-Experience Optimization
How can we help more clients understand TCM theory and its therapeutic benefits, and provide truly personalized service experiences?

Heartfelt Words…

As an overseas TCM practitioner, I deeply understand that for traditional Chinese medicine to take root in a foreign land, it must not only inherit the essence of millennia-old traditions but also stay grounded—integrating modern medicine and local culture to steadily advance its development. Through this program, I hope to share my authentic experiences and feelings from years of practicing abroad, and to show how, with a conscientious and earnest attitude, bit by bit I have earned patients’ trust and expanded TCM’s influence in a multicultural society.

A Historic Shift from the Margins to Professionalism

TCM in Australia was not recognized overnight. In 2000, Victoria became the first region in the world to legislate Chinese medicine—a breakthrough of great historical significance. This law not only formally acknowledged TCM’s legal status, but also provided an important legal precedent for other countries.

That legislation directly paved the way for Australia’s nationwide Chinese medicine legislation in 2012. What was once misunderstood as a “marginal, non-mainstream” fringe practice transformed into a licensed, regulated healthcare profession. TCM practitioners officially entered the national registration system alongside medical doctors and dentists, marking a leap from “traditional craft” to “formal medical practice.”

Although TCM has not yet been included in the federal Medicare system, it is now recognized by most private health insurers, allowing patients to claim partial reimbursement for consultations and acupuncture. This gradual institutional support reflects an industry’s years of effort to win professional respect and social trust, step by step.

Today, standing on this foundation, we continue to practice TCM. We must both honor the hard-won professional standing of our field and, through demonstrated efficacy, service, and communication, truly integrate TCM into Australia’s diverse healthcare system to bring tangible benefits to more people.

Rising Expectations and Ongoing Challenges

As TCM becomes better understood and accepted overseas, the demands on service quality and communication skills grow. One of the biggest challenges today is the scarcity of a new generation of practitioners who not only possess a solid clinical grounding in TCM but also can communicate deeply in English with patients from diverse cultural backgrounds. In Australia’s multicultural society, professional knowledge alone no longer suffices; effective diagnostic communication, cultural empathy, and a strong service experience are now key to TCM’s sustainable development.

Therefore, our expectations for the next generation of TCM practitioners go beyond “knowing classical prescriptions and performing acupuncture.” We hope they will also have strong bilingual abilities, an open international perspective, and a forward-looking learning attitude, so they can build genuine bridges between tradition and modernity, East and West.

Breaking the “Cheap Chinese Product” Stereotype

Many assume that because TCM comes from China it must be cheap, but in reality TCM services in Australia are not covered by the public healthcare system. While GP visits are almost free, Chinese medicine services (including herbal medicine and acupuncture) are self-paid, so pricing cannot be low. This system difference often leads to misunderstanding.

In fact, TCM provides highly personalized, holistic care. The time, experience, and diagnostic reasoning invested often far exceed short-term symptom relief. TCM’s value lies not in being “cheap” but in helping patients gain a deeper understanding of and improve their health—especially in areas such as chronic conditions, sub-health, emotional regulation, and lifestyle intervention. Its unique advantages are increasingly recognized by local Australians.

As a TCM practitioner with many years of experience in Australia, I firmly believe that to truly break the stereotype equating “cheap” with “Chinese products,” we must earn respect through professionalism, efficacy, and service experience. For TCM to thrive, we must begin with cultural confidence while also adapting to and embracing local healthcare systems.

Facing the integration and challenges of Western and Chinese medicine, I am committed to applying my expertise and patience, upholding the original mission of TCM, and helping more people improve their health through solid clinical service rather than seeking quick wins. It is only through steadfast clinical practice and continuous learning and innovation that we can go further.
